Reproductive efficiency of Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) in culture

Abstract

Reproductive efficiency of solitary females, with and without shelters, and of grouped females without shelters was similar (73-74%) but declined in grouped females given shelters and with increased size of female. Breaking the maternal-offspring connection prematurely did not affect efficiency which average 73% for females in bare tanks or on grating floors in such tanks. Resulting young survived and behaved comparably but prematurely-separated young grew more slowly. Adult male and non-maternal female crayfish were active predators on the young. Maternal females and their offspring should be isolated from them.
