Abstract

Widespread epizootic mortality has never been reported to occur in farmed or wild populations of redclaw, Cherax quadricarinatus. However, experience in the farming of other aquatic animals shows that disease always becomes a serious factor as the industry develops. A number of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, rickettsia-like organisms, fungi, protozoans and metazoans have been associated with mortality in farmed redclaw in Australia and South America. Few non-infectious causes of disease in redclaw have been reported, but they are also important to consider. The pathology of the range of disease conditions which have been reported from redclaw is reviewed. Prevention and treatment strategies for diseases in the farmed environment are also discussed.
