Abstract

The historical and present distribution of the introduced crayfish Orconectes rusticus (Girard) in Ontario and other Canadian provinces is outlined and discussed in terms of its negative impact on native crayfish species, as well as general management. The life history as studied in the field in Southern Ontario is summarized. Data on seasonal reproduction, growth, population structure and density were obtained from regular sampling in two rivers draining into Rice Lake near the supposed point of introduction of this species. The impact of the past use of this species in the bait fish industry and the feasibility of a commercial fishery to control populations are assessed. The development of a new sampling protocol and future monitoring and management of this invasive species is discussed.
