The process of caudal fan formation in freshwater crayfish

Abstract

The process of the tail fan formation in Astacus astacus, Pontastacus leptodactylus (three varieties), Procambarus clarkii and Cherax quadricarinatus is described. The formation process, and morphology of the caudal fan, was found to be similar in all the species studied in the family Astacidae. The formation of the telson during the first postembryonic stages in the Astacidae differed from that of P. clarkii and C. quadricarinatus (families Cambaridae and Parastacidae). In the Astacidae, the development of the uropods started long before hatching and proceeded inside the telson during the first two postembryonic stages. The presence of the telson thread was considered to be an important adaptation that allows for parental care in early postembryonic stages.
