Introduction of Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) into Sweden: Methods, results and management
Published Online:
Abstract
Since the first import of Pacifastacus leniusculus in 1960, this species has been introduced into 192 waters and they have reproduced in at least 44 of them. The main question deals with the capacity of P. leniusculus to reach the same level of production as Astacus astacus formerly in the same waters. In some lakes the populations are on the increase. An attempt is also made to analyze the reasons for failures in stockings. A. astacus is found in 60% of the waters where P. leniusculus has been introduced. The development of the populations of these two species is discussed in relation to the crayfish plague. Different methods of stocking are compared, and the effect of trapping on crayfish populations is discussed.
