Techniques for semi-intensive culture of freshwater crayfish in Australia
Published Online:
Abstract
There are almost 300 freshwater crayfish farms in Australia. Only a few operations contribute to the majority of the annual production of 172 tonnes in 1991-92. For more farms to become profitable, either the costs of production must be reduced or pond productivity must be increased, or a combination of both. Based on a review of the most successful methods used in the Australian freshwater crayfish industry, site selection criteria and culture techniques are provided. Recommendations are provided on the minimum size of farm, size and design of growout ponds, water quality and stock management techniques, provision of shelter or habitat, reduction of predation, poaching and competition, and harvesting methods.
