Abstract

Hepatopancreatic physiological parameters in mature, male noble crayfish were studied in different sections of a lagoon, downstream from a steel rolling mill. The objective was to find the favourable and unfavourable sections of the waste water for the crayfish. Contaminated sections of the lagoon had elevated temperatures and total iron concentrations, as well as measurable concentrations of mineral oils. Hepatopancreatic parameters such as its moisture, total energy and crude fat contents, showed that crayfish in warm, contaminated sections faired better than those in colder part of the lagoon. Moisture and total energy contents in abdominal muscle did not show measurable differences among animals from the two sections. Crude fat values in abdominal muscles were elevated in crayfish in premolt stage. Hepatopancreas parameters mirrored better the crayfish health than did abdominal muscle. Crayfish may have faired better in warm sections as a consequence of an abnormal molting cycle and the availability of food throughout the year.
