On the postural effects induced in female Cherax destructor (Clark) by serotonin and octopamine
Published Online:
Abstract
In a study intended to stimulate ovarian re maturation in Cherax destructor by inducing the release of ovary stimulating hormone from the thoracic neurosecretory system, it was observed that the postural effects induced by serotonin were not the same as has been reported for other decapods (Livingstone et al. 1980, Bevengut and Clarac 1982). Investigation of these postural effects and those induced by the complementary neurotransmitter octopamine indicate that the neuromuscular pathways of Cherax destructor are not the same as for the northern hemisphere species which have been studied. This finding has implications for phylogenetic studies as well as neurohormonal studies in parastacid crayfish.
