Mating capacity in male noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, under laboratory conditions
Published Online:
Abstract
The mating capacity of male noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, in the length interval 9.7-14.2 cm TL, under the given circumstances, laboratory conditions and mature females in constant supply resulted in singular males mating 12 to 42 (mean 23) females. Matings took place all years in water temperatures below 11°C. The individual mating period lasted up to eight weeks. A tendency was observed with an increase in number of matings with size of males up to approximately 13 cm. The results indicate that fewer males could be used in stocking programmes than the commonly adopted rule of one male per 2-6 females, at least under culture conditions.
