Aquaculture of the noble crayfish, Astacus astacus L., in Lithuania
Published Online:
Abstract
The aim of aquaculture of the noble crayfish, the only endemic in Lithuania, was to develop modern biotechnology for juvenile breeding and rearing in fishery farms. Mating and spawning of crayfish were carried out under pond conditions. 87.4% of females have passed the winter of 1993-1994 in Simnas Fishery Farm. Following the method for accelerated breeding in tanks, attached juveniles hatched 27 days earlier than at natural temperatures. The yield of juveniles at the 2nd stage was three times greater than what was obtained at natural temperatures. The greatest yield and mean body weight of one-summer-old crayfish were obtained in a pond of a Finnish model.
