Abstract

The occurrence of four crayfish species is confirmed in Poland. Two native species, Astacus astacus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) and two introduced species, Orconectes limosus (Rafinesque, 1817) and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852) are present. Places of occurrence of Austropotamobius torrentium were not reported although the possibility to find the stone crayfish in streams of the Tatry and Sudety mountains may still exist. Until now, there is no detailed research on crayfish in mountainous regions of Poland. The areas of occurrence of A. astacus and A. leptodactylus are patchy and scattered, although in the south-eastern part of Poland the noble crayfish is relatively common. Waters situated along the Polish border with Belarus and Ukraine are often inhabited by A. leptodactylus. O. limosus occurs in water bodies of more than 75% of the territory of Poland except of its south-eastern part. P. leniusculus is restricted to only a few water bodies of the Mazurskie Lakeland and the Pomorskie Lakeland.
